Papi Chulo
by Emanuel Xavier (New York, NY)

When I look into your papi chulo eyes
I see happiness and joy
the Christ-child con los tres reyes magos
and bags full of toys
for the first time noticing
the beauty of brightly lit bodegas
against cobalt skies
the subway smiles of homeless mothers
watching two men kiss quick secret goodbyes
walking away from each other
banjee boys on their way home
forbidden love glistening in their souls
like the melted candles and whispered prayers
from altars glowing late at night
in the barrios of a sleepless city
-still prejudiced and cold

When I touch your papi chulo skin
I abandon myself to ecstasy and hope
childhood scars lost somewhere in your embrace
abrazando tus sueños wrapped inside my coat
your breath acariciandome like the soft island breezes of Oy-
soothing the jagged edges of my ghetto face
while gently rocking under the moonlight
back and forth
back and forth
back and forth
to the rhythms of salsa and Spanish lullabies
engraved in memory like graffitied names on a hostel wall

When I kiss your papi chulo lips
I close my eyes to taste your tropics
my inhibitions drowning in the sweet river of your saliva
struggling to survive somewhere deep within
while tongues dance to the beat of our hearts
deseando que estos momentos would last forever
in a world without boundaries
in love without limits
en la isla de Nueva York
papito lindo
tu amor
es mi bendición

The Date
by Osvaldo del Valle (Chicago, IL)

I want to step to you and say, "What's up?"
Get to know you and start a relationship that won't f*ck up.
I want to hold your hand on our very first date.
Have you spoon feed me in a restaurant from food off your plate.
I want you to tell me funny stories from when you were a kid,
then tell me how surprised you were when I stepped up to you when I did.
I want you to walk me home very late at night.
At my door, hold me in your arms-oh so very tight.
I want you to tell me that you had a great time-that you want to do it again.
Then tell me that you like me and definitely want to be more than just friends.
I want you to pause and stare into my eyes and wonder if...
if you can kiss me right then-to taste my thick soft lips.
You go for yours and the kiss was definitely slammin!
You begin rubbing your pelvic area against mine-our bodies start jammin.
I am mad OPEN, so I stop and ask you if you want to come up to my place.
You gently say "no" saying that I'm too special-as you begin to caress my face.
You say this here thing that we got, you want it to be right.
Because you're tired of all those one nights.
You say that I'm your diamond, and you want to be my gem.
And that this relationship should start slowly until that moment when...
And if everything works out, my papi chulo you will gladly be.
From this moment of our very first kiss, until the end of eternity.
