INTERNATIONAL HOMBRES

WHAT’S LIFE LIKE for gay Latinos living outside the United States? We spoke with a couple of guys about themselves and about the gay life in their respective areas. So from South America to Europe, here are our first two International Hombres mini-interviews.

A LONDON LATINO
London Has Latinos, Too! Here’s Rigo.

RigoRigo is a 32-year-old gay Latino who lives and works in London, England. He is of mixed Afro-Cuban and Spanish descent. Since he was born and raised in London, he says he can’t compare what it’s like to live in any place other than jolly old England.

When asked what kind of cultural differences there are between England and other countries, he says, “I cannot really compare with any other place as I have not been out of my country of origin to be able to establish mayor difference—apart from the obvious of course, freedom. I suppose being Latino around here carries a little bit of exoticism!”

Careerwise, Rigo is a motivated individual who currently works as a software developer. His goal is to, “Get better and better at what I do, spanning my areas of expertise to be a better catch in this competitive job market.

Turning to the all-important issue of gay nightlife, he devilishly says, “It depends on what you are into—muscular and naughty?”

He then says, “London is full of places to go—even local to different boroughs. You don’t have to go into the very center of the city for a gay night out. For the visitor, I’d advise picking up one of the free publications like ‘Boyz’ to find out what’s going on.”

We finally ask Rigo for any advice he would give to a gay Latino from the United States about what London is all about? He replied, “I’ve never been to the U.S., but they say New York City is quite hip and a Latino haven. I would say that London is a bit of an uncharted territory in that regard! You get a lot of different nationalities here from Europe and around the world but no particular group is predominant.”
