INTERNATIONAL HOMBRES

WHAT’S LIFE LIKE for gay Latinos living outside the United States? We spoke with a couple of guys about themselves and about the gay life in their respective areas. So from South America to Europe, here are our first two International Hombres mini-interviews.

A BRAZILIAN PAPI
Meet Roberto, A Gay Latino Guy in Brazil.

RobertoOur first stop on our international trip is with Roberto, a 39-year-old from São Paulo, Brazil. Currently, Roberto works at a bank, but his long-term goal lies in the education field as he wants to teach Brazilian and Portuguese literature in a university.

The first thing we want to find out from Roberto is what life is like for gays in Brazil. He explains, “Well, nowadays, gays in Brazil have a good approval on part of many heterosexual Brazilians, mainly in Big cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife. The gay parade in São Paulo last year was a show! We had more than 700,000 people walking together, and lots of them were heterosexual who support gays. There are a great numbers of gay groups around the country that defend our rights. In some cities, laws that affirm gays rights were approved last year. TV, movies and theater have considered the homosexual thematic, making heterosexual people know more about us and be less discriminatory.

So where are the popular gay hangouts in Brazil. Robert lists many. He says, “In big cities there are many gay clubs to go to. I don’t know all of them, but I can quote some of them in my city, São Paulo. We have discos like Nostro mundo, Freedom, Danger, Tunel do Tempo, Salvation, ABC, So Go, Blue Space, and many more. With regards to bars, we have Habbeas Coppus, Caneca de Prata, Café Vermound, Queen, Pride and more. With regards to gay movies we have Art Palacio, Zen, República, Arte Palácio, Cairo, Las Vegas, Plaza and others.

When asked for a final message to his American gay Latino hermanos, Roberto says, “I’d say to the gay Latinos in United States that I like very much living in my country and I’m happy to be a gay here.”
